Enrollment at CDC

My driving journey began with research,
a lot of it. Stuck at home amidst a pandemic, having completed high school and waiting for university classes to begin, time was something I had too much of for the first time in years. Browsing the internet for countless hours resulted in an understanding of the steps involved in obtaining a license and the three driving schools in Singapore where this could be done.

The three most popular driving schools in Singapore are:

  • ComfortDelgro Driving Center (CDC)
  • Bukit Batok Driving Center (BBDC)
  • Singapore Safety Driving Center (SSDC)

ComfortDelgro Driving Center is located at Ubi Avenue 4 and its location was the most convenient for me. Thus, I proceeded to enroll CDC for a Class 3A (Automatic Transmission Car) License.

Before diving into the particulars of the course at CDC, let's discuss the process of obtaining a license in Singapore.

There are three tests, two theory tests that in which a score of at least 90% is required (45/50) and the final practical driving test.

The theory tests are as follows:

  1. The Basic Theory Test (BTT) which tests your knowledge of the traffic rules, signs and signals used in Singapore.
  2. The Final Theory Test (FTT) which tests your knowledge of the operation of the car and the techniques for driving safely on the road.

Now that we have gone over the requirements, here are the steps you must take on your journey:

  1. Enroll at one of the driving schools - I enrolled at CDC as its location was the most convenient for me.
    • The fee for enrollment is $171.20 excluding a deposit of $10 that must be maintained in your account.

  1. Complete your eye-test - this is required before any bookings can be made. Your account will be created and a learner ID will be issued, however, no bookings can be made.
    • The eye-test is a very short test and the entire process will take less than 5 minutes.
    • Due to the pandemic, walk-in appointments were not available at Ubi, however, this was still possible at the Kovan and Tampines branch offices.
    • The fee for this test is $1.82
    • You will also receive your Training Record Book, as shown below, with lots of essential information. You must carry this with you at all times when going to CDC.

  1. Have your digital photograph was taken for your license.
    • This is the photograph that will be printed on your Driver's license
    • It can only be taken at the Ubi branch, though, you can take it at any time before applying for the license.
    • The fee for this photograph is $6.42

  1. Book your BTT Internal Evaluation, Traffic Police BTT and Induction Program
    • Being a student at a driving school, an internal evaluation is compulsory before the final test and has a fee of $6.49 for non-peak hours and $7.49 for peak hours
    • The fee for the Traffic Police test is $6.50
    • The Induction program is required before booking any practical lessons. It introduces you to the systems used during the course and the internal controls of the car. The fee for this program is $34.29 for non-peak hours and $38.24 for peak hours.
    • These bookings are non-refundable and therefore, the probability that you will find an earlier date is pretty low. I would recommend that you book these as soon as possible to avoid long delays in obtaining your license.

After Passing your BTT, you may apply for your Provisional Driver's License (PDL) at the traffic police website. This allows you to drive with an instructor on the public roads of Singapore.

I know that containing your excitement to drive and only focusing on the theory of driving is frustrating, and probably impossible. At CDC, there are three modules that must be completed before the practical test and practical lessons for Module 1 can be completed inside the circuit, WITHOUT A PDL! This module usually takes 5-7 lessons, however, if you have your PDL, your instructor may take you onto the road after 2-3 lessons. A maximum of 7 classes can be booked before obtaining your PDL, though I would suggest that you book only 3 lessons.

These are the first steps you must take for your driving journey. The following articles will describe my experience as a Learner Driver at CDC and provide details for additional steps to be completed.
