The Basic Theory Test

The Basic Theory Test is a short, 50 question multiple-choice test that must be completed within 50 minutes. Its purpose is to test your knowledge of the traffic rules and regulations as well as the signs and markings in Singapore. Passing this test requires a score of 90% or above (at least 45 correct answers) and is required to obtain a PDL (Provisional Driver's License).

But how should one prepare for such a test? With so many signs and road markings all around Singapore and an endless list of rules, this must be the hardest part of the process...right?

NO! It is not. Take my word for it. The only thing this test requires is some reading and practice. That is all, you could be ready for it within a week or two!

Being enrolled with CDC, you get 15 hours of e-learning access. This provides short video clips with narration as well as text explaining the rules of conduct while driving on the road as well as the message conveyed by the various signs and road-markings in Singapore. The modules guide you through a series of lessons, building up the knowledge you require for the test. The modules contain questions to test your knowledge of the content at every step as well. Moreover, you get access to 4 free trial test sessions, either online or in-person. These sessions allow you to attempt as many mock exams as you want within 50 minutes and you get your score immediately after, along with a full report of the questions you got wrong. In my opinion, this is the best way to prepare as it exposes you to the testing environment and makes the final test seem like less of a challenge. Being enrolled at a school, you will also be required to pass a compulsory internal evaluation which will take the form of yet another mock test. Whether you pass or fail this test, you can still go ahead with the final test, however, it gives you an insight into how prepared you are for the real Traffic Police test.

Another important consideration is whether you need to buy a book or not for this test. Though a book can be helpful, having access to the e-Learning modules means that it is not necessarily required. Being a test requirement mostly memorization of the signs and traffic rules and not much of a practical, application-based test, reviewing the e-Learning material and practicing to ensure that the material can be recalled when needed should be enough preparation, however, there is no such thing as being over-prepared. If you have the time, prepare until you feel confident.

Lastly, regarding test bookings, the average waiting time for a test is 1 month as a large number of students are waiting to pass this test in order to move on to the next stage. Book both the internal evaluation and the final Traffic Police BTT as soon as you complete your enrollment and eye-test to ensure that you get the earliest possible date and are able to start lessons on the public roads of Singapore as soon as possible!

Good Luck preparing for and passing your BTT. Remember, though it seems like a major hurdle between you and the public roads, the test is designed to test your knowledge of road etiquette and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of you and other road users!
